Walt Whitman Biography
- Walt Whitman was born on May 31st, 1819 in West Hills, New York.
- When he was 17 years old, he turned to the field of teaching.
- At age 22, he eventually found an interest in journalism.
- He became the editor of The Crescent in 1848.
- He produced 7 editions of the book of poems called Leaves of Grass.
- During the civil war, he became preoccupied with themes such as soul, death, and immortality for his poems.
- In 1871, he wrote the Democratic Vistas, which was one of his best works. He was uncomfortable with the incredible corruption that the United States was facing while rebuilding after the Civil War.
- In 1873, Whitman suffered a stroke, and while he was ill he spent much of his time devoted to putting the Leaves of Grass into final order.
- In his final years, Whitman received recognition of his great literary works.
- He died on March 26, 1892, in Camden, New Jersey.
